In increasing numbers, Westerners are turning to yoga and meditation to increase their physical and mental wellbeing. Yoga consists of various physical, mental and spiritual practices that originated in Ancient India. While there are many different types of yoga, most involve linking conscious breathing with a series of physical poses (called asanas). Whether you are looking to relax, deepen your spirituality or simply get more exercise, yoga could be beneficial for you. Moreover, doing yoga in Spanish is a great way to improve your vocabulary and listening comprehension skills.

You don’t have to be extremely flexible to do yoga. The good news is that as long as you are linking your breath to the movements, you are doing it. Be gentle with your body and, as with any new skill, take things step by step. It’s easy to find yoga for all levels in a studio or online. Trying a class in Spanish can be great language practice and need not be intimidating because the teachers usually demonstrate the poses. Additionally, most yoga instructors speak in a slow, calm voice. If at any point you find yourself totally lost, a quick peek at your neighbors will get you back on track.

If you are completely new to yoga, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the basic postures or attend a class in your native language before trying a class in Spanish. Likewise, if you are just beginning to learn Spanish, reviewing the names of the parts of the body and vocabulary associated with movement may be helpful as well (see below). If you are unsure of or unable to hold a posture, don’t stress. It is always an option to simply sit in a comfortable seated position and reconnect with your breath until the next pose.

In Medellín there are many places where you can practice yoga!
